A small step for the author, a giant leap for humanity: today Rutger Bregman, a Dutch historian, has published his new book, Humankind: A Hopeful History.

In simplest terms, Bregman claims we humans are not merely a bunch of egoists. We are essentially good, and therein lies the hope.

This is yet another book with high aspirations; according to The Guardian, it may well be the Sapiens of 2020. We’ll see if their prediction comes true; anyway, the book sounds like a promising read.

You may also recall another hopeful non-fiction book of similar nature, The Better Angels of Our Nature. And if that’s not enough, check out Factfulness by the late Hans Rosling, who preferred to put his optimism into numbers.
